I didn't realize that she did the C&C cover, a lot of the images are from cards in that set, but did she do the overall image?

She did some art for Warhammer: Invasion and Star Wars LCG. Her art is in Eldritch Horror as well.

Solo Game Marathon

A couple of weekends ago, my wife took the kids out of town for Spring Break, taking in some roller coasters and museums down in the Charlotte area. I got left behind, partly because I had to work and partly because it simplified the 'what do we do with the pets?' question. My wife suggested to me some work in the garden I might do while they were away, but regrettably it pretty much rained all day Saturday. I know, I was heartbroken. So what on earth should I do instead?

The answer, which should be no shock to anyone reading the subject line, was a Solo Game Marathon. The first part (which was actually Friday night) was going to the game store (always an important move) to get a game I could play solo. I knew what game I wanted that to be, but my nearest game store, I knew, was out of stock so I went to another, hoping against hope they would have it (while making a mental note of some back-up options should they be out). Well, they had that game, one last copy. I had a nice chat with the guy in the store about it too. But more on that game later.

Come Saturday morning, up early (I have a canine alarm clock). I sketched out a plan for the day and the first two were what I thought of as my first solo games. Now one advantage (?) of a solo game is that you can take notes as extensive as you like to aid in the write-up of the game and I wrote up enough to make full-on session reports. So that is what I actually did. But in addition to pointing you at those, I have a few additional comments while I tie the thing together in this blog post.

The first game was Roll Through the Ages: The Late Bronze Age. I am relatively new to solo gaming, beyond RPG style making up characters and writing adventures and drawing maps. I never thought of myself as a solo gamer in fact, as the appeal of a game is partly the other players. But when I got RTTA, I noticed it had a solo mode and gave it a try. I found it pretty fun and I also enjoyed the puzzle of trying to work out the highest possible score. I don't know that the expansion was ever officially adopted with the solo rules, but I went ahead and played it anyway to open up my marathon.

The session report: Solo Game with the Expansion: Stall in the Development of an Empire

After that, my other landmark game was Zombie in my Pocket. This was the first game where I had to make something (beyond printing a sheet out and writing on it). That might show in the grayscale printout and maybe some curl in the tiles where they are stuck together. This was a neat session, it came out quite straightforwardly, getting a weapon and not meeting many zombies until suddenly they were everywhere at the end. The neat part was the last turn, at the graveyard. In the game, you draw a card for an event, but in the Graveyard, you draw again for the time you spend burying the Totem. I did that and got ITEM so I figured what the heck let's see what I found - and it was a can of soda.

That kind of inspired me to write it up more like a story:
Back to the Haunted House

The next game was my next print and play project after ZimP, but apparently I found a color printer to print it on. I have enjoyed Free Trader a good deal, though some games you fail quickly and some games you get enough of an early boost that you are just trucking around waiting until it is time to make your payment. Not this session, it was tense and desperate all the way through. I ended up writing it up as a computer log and was pleased to see it was tipped by the designer!

From the Logs of the Cautious Optimist

Having enjoyed a few games solo, I took the next step of actually buying games purely to play solo. The first of these, which I have talked about several times in the blog, Onirim, I played combining two of the expansions, The Books Of Steps Lost And Found and The Towers, which changes things quite a bit. This game went rather well.

Onirim with Book and Tower - a detailed report

The other one I bought at the same time was Friday. I haven't played it as much as Onirim, partly because it is more involved to set up, but I have enjoyed it each time I played it and after this time, I feel ready to take it on at the next difficulty level. Oh and this was the one game where I forgot to take a photo of my final position. Which was a shame.

Surviving and Thriving - a detailed report

All of those were pretty quick light games. But a chat in a Geek List about Merchants & Marauders made me aware of a solo variant (actually there are a couple of them) and I said at the time I might give it a try if I get the chance, a multi-hour solo game being somewhat more tricky to fit in. But here was that chance and I took it. It also guarantees M&M a place on my five and dime list for 2014 which is rather pleasing. I enjoyed it and it was a fun adventure (especially with the additional challenge of getting Glory in the multiple arenas) but even though I played on Medium difficulty, it was still pretty easy, even given my first turn disaster. So if I play it again, at least one more level of difficulty up.

Lone Marauder

Then finally, I play the New Game, which was The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. I figured there were probably enough session reports detailing how much trouble they had getting through Mirkwood, so I didn't write it up. I watched Rodney Smith's series of videos to learn how to play it, browsing over the rule book as I did. That pretty much got me playing and I played it 3 times solo with the core set Leadership deck and lost each time. One game I really thought I had it. The first scenario is clever, because in it, you complete the first two objectives and then there is a Fork in the Road and you pick the final part at random - you either stay on the path and find your way out or you stray off the path and you have to kill the big spider to escape. So I had gotten to that point, strayed off the path and the game instructs you to go get a spider card from discard or deck and add it to the staging area. So the obvious thing to do is get the Ungoliant Spawn that you need to kill to win and that is what I did, got my guys to hit it for 5 points of damage and was ready to do that again (which would kill it), but a shadow effect caused my attackers to become exhausted so they couldn't attack that round. And then the following round, another shadow effect did a point of damage to each of my characters. And this came after some heavy fighting to get to this point so just a point to each of them wiped out half my forces, including Aragorn, with the remaining heroes quickly overwhelmed after that.

But it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy would it?

The rest of my family had a blast on their roller coasters and even the rainy day in the museum was fun. But I had a pretty good time as well.

I'll probably get shot for this, but I actually use a different coloured sleeves for all the cards of a sphere. This is simply to help sorting and storing. All the encounter cards are in black sleeves, clear ones for the quests.

I know it is probably not tournament legal, but I don't play tournaments so I don't really care. It makes it easier (for me) to ensure the right resources are paid for cards.

Yep, check out her website: magali-villeneuve.blogspot.com. She has the C&C cover image listed as one of her pieces.

As an update i got my first two games in playing solo Passage through Mirkwood with the Spirit deck and heros from the core set only. I initially used 1 copy of Gandalf as per the starter rules.

First game i was questing fine (unsurprising given this is hero strength) and got to the fork in the road before trouble from mounting Orcs in the staging area and the Chieftan plus a Beastmaster enagaged at once and took down the heros over 3 rounds as i couldnt place any damage on them.

Second game i included 2 Gandalfs (figuring that dual players would get 2 Gandalfs potentially between them) so i could allow myself a second help (albeit not played at same time). This went much better, the nastier Orcs stayed hidden away and the spiders were more easily dispatched. Also the Ungolian Spawn was avoided. Overall this went pretty smooth as i kept my threat low.

Only question i have really is how many Gandalfs should a solo deck have - the start rule says take 1 Gandalf so is that the limit? If not then in the end i would prefer to tweak the game myself and have an extra Gandalf than say use the easy rules.

3 Gandalfs all the way :)

No reason to limit yourself artificially to 1 or 2 when the rules state a maximum of 3 of the same card, by name, can be included in your deck.

The only wrinkle is that I'm assuming you're playing with a 30 card starter deck? If so, 2 Gandalfs would better preserve the intended ratio that a maximum of 3 cards does in a 50 card deck.

My feelings exactly.
In LOTR LCG I feel very inclined to use her cards in my decks...

And I LOVED the new Daenerys she posted:

Android Netrunner had extended art promo cards for the identities. I would love to see something like that for LOTR, like maybe update the Core set era heroes.
