Do you think this means that with a Tactics hero, you could play Galadriel and cheat Book of Eldacar into play?

I would guess no.

Since those cards read, "Reduce the cost to play..."
And I'm pretty sure there is a difference between playing and putting into play.

you are smart.... Brain.

Welcome! This looks like a pretty fun deck. I don't have any of the book sets yet, but I've been planning to make a similar full Dwarf deck. I generally favour Tactics/Spirit combo decks quite a lot :D

I'm guessing you only have a few of the sets so far, but if you get The Long Dark, Erebor Battlemaster might be a little better than Veteran Axehand. It's obviously a lot better in a full dwarf deck, and the lower cost of the Veteran is a bit more attractive, so your mileage may vary.

Also just a heads up, if you plan to do any multiplayer, the Northern Tracker is generally better for location control than Lorien Guide.
At any rate, Northern Trackers are also very good in general for clearing out locations with awful travel restrictions.
I think a lot of people would say Lorien Guide is awful, but I like her a lot and feel that they just play differently (imo, Lorien Guide is a decent quester with a good side effect, and Northern Tracker clears locations or, in lieu of that, can help defend if there are no locations to clear that turn).

As for resource generation, if you pick up On the Doorstep, you could replace Eowyn or Glorfindel with Oin who is a Spirit Dwarf who gets a Tactics icon when you have 5 or more Dwarves. He'd be a great candidate for Horn of Gondor and the resource generation from Zigil Miner since he'd be able to play for everything.

I'd also play with it an see how it goes with your tactics resources. I run a 1 Tactics 2 Spirit Rohan deck and find Eomer with lots of unusable resources in some games when I used your strategy of low- or zero-cost tactics cards, so putting in just a couple of high-cost tactics cards, like Citadel Plate or some eagles, can help mitigate that.

and yeah, Light of Valour was made for Spirit Glorfindel :D

So I recently picked up this game, and have really been enjoying it (I'm obviously also in the Bay Area). I'm really interested in the fellowship events, but am pretty unfamiliar with them. Is it possible for a fairly new player with only 2 core sets to participate? Or would it be possible to borrow a deck from somebody who is attending? Thanks!

What would I do if FFG tasked me with revising player cards of the core set to bring them up to par with modern cards:

Thank you guys for your welcomes and input :-)

Andrew, yeah only got a few decks so far. I have to get more plays before purchasing more decks, otherwise I'll go crazy - i know myself ;-)

re lorien guide - i actually found her quite useful when finding myself in a position where I can't really muster up enough willpower due to a build up in the staging area - ill keep her until i find a more useful ally! :)

re oin, sounds interesting :-)

and yeah, i might add a few powerful eagles depending on how my resource gen tactics (pun intended) work out!

Whoa. These are awesome!!!

So is there LOTR LCG power creep? Since there's no national meta like in other CCG/LCG, I really don't know if people still use core cards. My only comparison is A:N and the core is still very much a part of the game. Perhaps the power creep isn't as bad as in Pokemón. Though even Magikarp hasn't been given a boost over the original.

There are some really neat ideas here! Nice work, even though it is only a 'what-if' scenario.

A little bit. There are still some core cards that are invaluable. Gandalf is really good still and the one here just scales him down a tiny bit (play from hand rather than just any time he enters play).

Some of the other ones here just need their costs adjusted (too expensive, like Citadel plate).

A lot of stuff that are still extremely useful:
Feint
Unexpected Courage
Steward of Gondor
Hasty Stroke

I think these will always be great cards...and there are a bunch of other similar cards.

The thing about Core Set is there so few medicore cards. Most are either just mega powerful/cost-efficient or utterly useless/extremely situational.

What I was trying to do is upscale the outdated ones to made them a valid choice to include in a modern deck.

For instance, I would totally consider putting this version of a Citadel Plate on Beregond + a Gondorian Shield, vs. two Gondorian Shields alone.

I really like your Brok, Ever Vigilant, Citadel Plate, and Fortune or Fate (that VP is a heck of an idea). I think Beorn's Hospitality might be too inexpensive, I'd like 3 better (although making it a refresh action does balance it some, and 3 cost events are somehow MUCH more expensive than 2).

Strength of Will's pretty great, too, and I like some of this art better than the original (although your pic for Beorn's Hospitality, while amusing, doesn't really represent the effect ;)). Thanks for your work!

Ha. You recall correctly. And I (thankfully) recall that I have yet to draw two in a game I've used the combination. Noted for the future, though.

3 is so much more expensive than 2 because it requires entire turn worth of resources for a monosphere deck, and non-monosphere deck is a whole kind of different story. I'm still on the edge about it, though, and I'm thinking of either lowering the healing amount to 2 or raising cost to 3.

The art for Beorn's Hospitality is a whole different story. First, I searched for a "lotrish" looking table with fine food. Easy enough, yes? Not at all, at least it wasn't for me. Most of the stuff I found was photographed and/or of different timeline(not fitting thematically). So, then I decided to go deeper and search by Beorn tag himself. Most of the art I found were scenes of battle and of him being a bear and stuff. But then I stumbled upon this piece and laughed at the though of a card named "Beorn's Hospitality" featuring this art :D

I have this one in store if I'll decide to add a serious art to it:

I think it's hilarious and I say keep it. I mean, this is a set just for fun in any case, right?

Contrary to Brain's opinion, I would say yes. From page 8 of the rulebook, the section explaining the parts of a card:

Core rulebook p. 8 wrote:

2. Cost: The number of resources a player must spend from the appropriate resource pool(s) to play this card from his hand. Cost is not found on hero cards.

When cards talk about "put into play a card with cost X", they are always talking about this number. That, I think, is not in dispute.

My assertion is that when cards like Galadriel say "a card of cost X", what they mean by "cost" is that section of the rules: the cost to play the card. When a card is "put into play", the cost is bypassed and does not have to be paid (because the trigger of the "put into play" effect can be considered that card's cost). And in fact, it would not make sense to say "the cost to put a card into play", precisely because when a card is "put into play", its cost is not paid.

Which means that the term "cost" and the term "the cost to play" would be interchangeable, and when Galadriel's effect uses the term "cost", it would include any reductions in the card's playing cost (whether phrased as "cost" or "cost to play", because those are interchangeable concepts). If the designers had meant her card to not be able to include any reductions from other effects, they would have said "the printed cost".

Putting cards back in any order is neat thematically as well when you consider her ability to look into the future.

Well after a really crappy encounter draw and playing it right...man this game is HARD! Played the second adventure from the base set and got 2 advancement tokens on the first quest before failing miserably. We had 2 of the 5 threat locations out in staging for a long time cause every time we were going to travel there one of the 6 advancement locations that are mandatory to travel to appeared. I did manage to kill the hill troll but 2 turns later was engaged by 2 Dol Guldur Beastmasters and Chieftan Ufthak in a single turn. That was the beginning of the end :(

Looking forward to start planning a more powerful deck to take that adventure on once again!
