I put this game on the shelf a while ago and have been thinking about selling it. I bought it as a solo game and while I like it a lot I get the sense that the game is possible to play solo but nothing I've seen in the rules or cards suggests that solo play was considered in the design of the game. It feels more like an after-thought... as though the mechanics of the game allow you to play solo but it wasn't built to be played that way.

However I do still like the mechanics of the game and I've been a sucker to give it a second chance. I recently bought Carrock and the Over Hill, Under Hill saga expansions. After a couple run throughs of each I'm not entirely convinced. Is it me? Am I just not a good enough gamer?

I've been trying to beat the Ere Away by Light of Day quest. The first stage of the quest is easy. However, once you hit 2A it seems rather impossible. I've been using the suggested deck from the Under Hill rules. The second stage of the quest adds 3 trolls and a location to the encounter area. By this time I have enough threat that at least two of the trolls will engage me and there's enough threat in the encounter area that I cannot quest (most of the treachery cards have Doomed). It seems like there is no way to actually beat this quest solo!

Unless there is some super-specific deck combination and drop of luck that I've been missing... Am I wrong?

You know, I only briefly glanced at the "suggested" decks. My first impression is they kind of sucked. LOL. Too unfocused and trying to do to much, not a heck of a lot of card synergy.

It sounds like you had the opposite proplem I had.

My proplem is going through stage one too fast, and not having enough allies in play to deal with the trolls the way I want! LOL

I have been trying to slow down the first stage by a few turns in order to have the stuff I need to deal with the trolls, PLUS to build up Bilbos resource supply in order to unsack party members.
