No one in my group would even consider playing a game where every turn all we do is add modifiers and check numbers against other numbers. If we wanted that, we'd go back to work.
This doesn't sound like LOTR:LCG at all. This sounds more like Illuminati.. which was an abyssmal game of adding and subtracting modifiers. LOTR LCG is hardcore, but for different reasons... and math has very little to do with any of it. It's more about building a balanced deck that can handle multiple "problems" with an acceptable success rate from a diverse number of scenarios.
I think you've gotten the wrong impression from that video.
