I understand needing two copies to play 4 player, but, what about 3 sets so that you have at least three of each card available for deck construction? Are the cards good enough to make it worth it? Or, are there enough other cards now that it would not be necessary?

I think a 2nd set is a must, especially with 3 or 4 players having their trackers, and getting the additional copy of the "uncommon" and "rare" cards. Having so many "common" cards and duplicates, you can use these for proxies for the remaining cards you may have.

But I also justified it with cost. I picked up the original base game on a clearance sale for under $20. I picked up my 2nd set used for about that too including shipping since I just took the card and cardboard and ditched the box and rules. I also traded away my now extra set of "uncommons" for another card game. Finally, I just picked up my third set in the same way because the proxies were really bugging me. I'll probably look to trade away those two sets of uncommons as well.

So while the 3rd set has a greatly diminished value, there might still be enough value there, especially if you can get it cheaper than full price and make use of the extra stuff as trade bait.
