I was in the same predicament as your are in- I mostly play solo as well. The information I was interested in and sought out was the heroes in each set. Fortunately it wasn't hard to find the data- ninjadorg put together a hero database geek list here:http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/73008/the-lord-of-the-ring...?
I've been fooling around with using 4 heros, and enjoying greatly. Look in the files section, I think it's "the fellowship" solo variant or something similar.
Because its just me and the game and a chunk of time i have finally set aside to play, i only have to cater to my experience.... It is no sacrilege to tweak a few dynamics so it works with your personality and what you enjoy. One step at a time, I tweak and balance and loosen and tighten the mechanics before I play. I dont change any rules as i play, only before and after a game.
After I finish the game, I reflect on the level of challenge, the flow of the game, how bad I won or got my butt kicked, and I draw some hypothesis and conclusions from the game and apply the new ideas. I'm pretty close to creating a rewarding system that is a custom built personalized fit for the experience I want to manifest in the precious moments I have to play. I love the game
