I'm confused about how to handle defending and attacking. In the book, they always show the same number of enemies as characters.

Let's say you have four characters: three heroes and one ally.

the ally quested and one hero quested.

Three three enemies are engaged - two heroes are readied.

Can one hero defend against the three enemies and one hero attacks? Or, do two enemies pair up with two of the readied heroes to either choose to defend or attack - but then, what is done with the third enemy?
