You must have read that from one of Histories of Middle Earth.
In Tolkien's earlier works, there are legions and legions of flying Balrogs with wings and such.
However in later works, he made a note to himself to limit the number of Balrogs to less than 10, and have them really powerful as befits their race as Maia. They don't fly anymore, and atleast 3 Balrogs have died due to falling (Glorfindel threw his down mountainside, Ecthelion threw his down a deep deep fountain, and Gandalf threw his down from pinacle of Misty Mountains), but they still retained their description of 'shadowy wings', and is somewhat disputable if can fly or not.
So in actuality, one Balrog would be able to beat up quite a lot of elves.
