Thread: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game:: Rules:: Defending characters and shadow effects that exhaust characters

Hi, just a quick question because I don't know if we have played it correctly all the time:

An enemy is attacking, I declare a defender and exhaust him. Shadow card is revealed and it says "Exhaust one of your characters". If the defending character is my only character in play, then what happens:

1) no effect
2) the defender is exhausted (again?) and is removed from combat, resulting in an undefended attack

We always played it according to 2) but giving it a second thought that doesnt make sense considering the combat resolution steps, does it?
