Well, we moved on to Dol Guldur, and found our decks to be entirely inadequate.

Dol Guldur is tough. :)

But if you really want to know what "tough" means... try it solo! :D

1) do you need a hero of a given sphere to pay for a song of that same sphere? (i.e. needing a lore hero to pay for a song that gives lore)

No. They are neutral (don't have a sphere), so you do not need any specific sphere to get them into play.

2) How winnable is it with 2 players and bi-color decks? One deck is tactics/leadership and the other is lore/spirit.

Depends on what cards you have available, of course, but I have zero trouble beating it with my 2-player decks.

However, it seems to be really crippling if the minority hero is taken, and only slightly less so if a majority hero is taken. Further, threat reduction doesn't happen a whole lot - and threat rises quickly in this scenario.

Yes, it definitely helps to keep that in mind, when building the decks.

Dol Guldur is one of those scenarios, that you cannot tackle with just about any deck combination.

A good starting point: Pick one major sphere for each deck (with two heroes), which will be very useful early on (i.e. Spirit and Tactics, so you can deal with locations (Northern Tracker), Threat (The Galadhrim's Greeting, Gandalf), and dispatch some of the enemies (Tactics in general)).

This way, you can probably live with one of the minor sphere heroes being taken.
